It works like a second distillation inside a single run, which gives you one more variable to control.
Which spirits benefit from a thumper?
Thumpers are a classic partner for whiskey and rum. They give you a stronger spirit from one pass without stripping out the grain or molasses character. Some distillers use them for brandy too. For a clean, neutral spirit like vodka, a thumper helps but isn't the whole answer. That style usually needs more refining than a pot and thumper can give.
