Every spirit starts as a question: what happens to this wash when copper, heat, and vapor go to work on it? A lot of people start asking that question with the 6 Gallon Complete Copper Moonshine Still. It comes complete with a thumper and a worm, so you have the whole path from pot to condenser on day one.
Which spirits suit a 6 gallon still?
This still is made for small batches. With six gallons in the pot, you can run a corn-and-rye whiskey mash one weekend and a molasses rum wash the next, then compare notes. Brandy works too. A small batch of fruit wine shows you how the fruit carries through the run. When a test costs you a few gallons instead of a whole barrel, you're free to experiment.
What the thumper and worm do
The thumper sits between the pot and the condenser. Vapor bubbles through it and gets a second chance to separate, which many whiskey and rum makers like. The worm is the coiled condenser. There the vapor cools and turns back into liquid you can watch, smell, and sort into cuts. That's the scientist's part of the job: deciding where the heads end, where the hearts begin, and when the tails take over.
