Whiskey and rum share a problem: the mash is heavy. Grain settles and molasses caramelizes, and both can burn onto the bottom of the pot when the heat only comes from below. The patented 10 Gallon FlameFlow™ was designed around that problem.
Four tubes of flame
Four large tubes carry the flame up and through the body of the still. That way the heat reaches the mash from inside, not only from the floor. The maker says it heats up in half the time of their standard units, is less likely to scorch and is easier to control accurately. Development took over two years, with more than 100 logged hours of testing. The design holds patent number 10,561,960.
Whiskey on the grain
Corn, rye and malted barley give whiskey its flavor, and scorching ruins it. Even heat lets the grain come through. The thumper adds a second distillation in a single run, which is the classic route to a full-bodied spirit.
Rum from molasses
Molasses is dense, sugary and easy to burn. Spreading the heat out helps keep the rich character you want and avoid the bitter, burnt notes you don't.
The complete set
- Pot, thumper, worm and cap
- Temperature gauge on the cap
- Built with 100% lead-free materials
Brandy, gin and schnapps makers will find the easier heat control just as useful. Owning a still is legal. Distilling alcohol requires federal TTB permits, and you must follow federal, state and local law.
