Built for the Brown Spirits
If whiskey, rum or brandy is the spirit you want to make, start with this still. The 30 Gallon Advanced Model is a complete pure copper setup: a 30 gallon pot, a 6 gallon thumper and a 6 gallon worm with a 1/2 inch coil. Each piece is part of the experiment, and you control the variables.
Why the Thumper Matters
Vapor leaving the pot bubbles through the thumper before it reaches the worm. That extra contact acts like a second pass. It raises the proof and keeps the grain, molasses or fruit character that makes whiskey taste like whiskey and rum taste like rum. Charge the thumper a different way and the result changes. That's the alchemy. Write down what you did, taste your cuts and repeat what worked. That's the science.
Which Spirits Fit This Still
- Whiskey: the classic match. Copper, a thumper and a coiled worm make up the old-school American setup.
- Rum: carries molasses and sugarcane flavor all the way to the jar.
- Brandy and schnapps: a 30 gallon pot gives fruit washes room to work.
- Gin and vodka: possible with extra runs and careful cuts, but a pot still with a thumper leans toward flavor, not neutral spirit.
Copper Does Real Work
Copper isn't just there for looks. It reacts with sulfur compounds in the vapor, which is one reason distillers have trusted it for generations. The worm's 1/2 inch coil gives that vapor a long path to cool and turn back into liquid.
